I bought a new QNAP410 nas and are in the process of working out what other things I want it to do besides act as a file store. Out of the box it supports "TimeMachine," which is useful in the apple house. It also supports Asterisk and NZBget which were the main "cute" features I wanted. I also have a weather station I would like to link to the device so it can log the weather. With a bit of toying it supports ruby, but compiled jems will be much harder to get going. The plan is to get the weather station logging through ruby scripting, and put in a small sinatra app, to display history. I would also like to have some scripting automagically link into thetvdb and themoviedb to get information/covers for my backed up DVD's and recorded TV.
